EDOUARD RICHARD

Édouard Richard, born in Niort, discovered documentary photography while studying film in Canada, where he was captivated by the medium’s power to capture contemporary society’s complexities. His career began in 2017 during France’s presidential campaign, and in the following years, he documented key political and social events, including labor reform protests, climate marches, and the Yellow Vests movement, until the Covid-19 pandemic prompted a shift in his focus.

After the lockdown, Édouard turned to more long-term projects that explore the relationship between people and their environments. In California, he photographed individuals who had left urban life to seek refuge in the desert, creating sensitive portrayals of these communities living of the grid. On Réunion Island, he captured the intersecting identities of Creole and queer youth alongside his partner, model and actress Raya Martigny, shedding light on the challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals in this isolated setting.

Édouard’s style blends documentary realism with a cinematic approach. He balances documentary and fashion photography, with his work featured in Vice, Le Monde Diplomatique, Hobbies, Fisheye, and Libération, Draft 001…
